Instagram is Too Hard

I traveled down to Eugene, OR this week to WFH (literally) and visit the family. This morning I made a comment to my mom, an active photographer:

You haven’t posted to Instagram lately.

She responded:

It takes too long. Instagram asks me if I want to share my photo and I have to go through another menu. I just want to take a photo and another afterward.

It’s not that she doesn’t want to share photos. She does so all the time, gifting photography scrapbooks, framing photos throughout the house, and reviewing pictures taken from recent trips or family gatherings.

Minor friction can kill engagement.

What can you remove in your own product[1]? How can you simplify the experience? Can you reduce the time and effort[2] required to complete your engagement loop?

[1] But first ask yourself these three questions before killing features.

[2] Technology and new interfaces continue to increase user’s ability to take action.
