Rand Fishkin recently wrote about Manufacturing Serendipity. In short, he describes the butterfly effect and long term payoff of connecting with other people. Although impossible to measure, Rand dedicates 30% of his time to meeting entrepreneurs and being generally helpful.
Honestly, I don’t get out as much as I should. There are soooo many industry events that I would be beneficial to attend but it’s so easy to prioritize working late at the office yet I’m missing out on so much opportunity.
Here’s my progression to how I landed at PlayHaven and the world’s entrepreneurial HQ, San Francisco:
1) joined AMA at UofO
2) saw job opening as marketing intern
3) applied, somehow fooled my way into getting the position
4) worked on a project that slightly interfaced with the VP of Product
5) eventually migrated to product
6) met up with a former C-level employee from my current company for dinner
7) learned of an opportunity
8) applied, moved to SF
